The Whitsundays

Captain Cook named the Whitsunday group of Islands while charting the east coast in 1770. I guess you could say he started the whole yacht-chartering scene up here.

We caught up with the Allens (ala one of the Big Reds) in Airlie Beach.

We had all booked a trip on the “Camira”, a very camp purple catamaran, out to Whitehaven Beach.

What a day… we snorkelled on probably one of the most pristine coral reefs I have seen, the Coral Gardens. The Junior Rangers were into the water – Kai went in ahead with the Allens. Shae came in with me… I have to say it again, I am amazed at Shae’s confidence out here in the open water. We saw lots of fish, including Nemos.

Two thumbs up (I think)

The kids had great fun running all over the boat, much to the concern of Lindy (wind, waves, very small railings, open seas, Shae…).

Then it was off to the world famous Whitehaven beach – 93% pure silica. It is white, but was a little dirty today. Somehow I recall other places like Lucky Bay being whiter… still, we had a great day playing on the beach.
